Government Documents are a rich source of information. Pius XII Memorial Library (Depository #0323) has been a designated Federal Depository Library since 1866, giving us a strong historical collection combined with electronic access to current governmental information. We serve the students, faculty, and staff of Saint Louis University as well as the citizens of Missouri's First Congressional District. Reference materials are located in the reference area on Level One. Newer materials are listed in the Saint Louis University Libraries Catalog with direct access to electronic resources. However, many older materials are not cataloged, so please ask for help at the reference desk for locating those items. The reference librarians provide assistance with government information in all subject areas and formats. The majority of the documents collection is housed off-site and items will be available through a variety of service delivery options, requestable through the SLU Libraries catalog. For further information, contact the Reference department at (314) 977-3103, and ask to speak with the Government Documents Assistant, Jesse Swoboda.
The government documents collection of Pius XII Memorial Library is a separate collection of publications received from the U.S. Government Printing Office through the Federal Depository Library Program. As one of approximately 1,250 depository libraries, Pius Library selects categories of government publications which are sent to the library free of charge. In return for this free receipt of publications, Pius Library provides access and reference service for the collection as well as space and maintenance for the materials. Access to the depository collection is guaranteed to all citizens by law (Title 44, Chapter 19 United States Code).
Our collection includes items in various formats: paper, microfiche, CD-ROMs, and maps. Pius Library's government document collection is more than 800,000 volumes strong and most notably includes the following: more than 6000 volumes of the Congressional Serial Set, a complete run of the American State Papers and the Congressional Globe, 18th and 19th Century Census materials, and a large selection of NACA and NASA documents.
Pius Library is a selective depository library, meaning the library only selects those categories which best meet the needs of our patrons. Currently, Pius Library selects approximately 50% of available items. Ellis Library at the University of Missouri-Columbia is the Regional Depository and selects 100% of all depository items and is responsible for the development and maintenance of historical document collections throughout the state.
